It’s hot. Here in central Kanagawa, it was a scorcher today. Definitely the hottest day of the year so far here. And the rainy season just ended! We have another 2 months of 30+ weather. I took a video today talking about this.
So, how’s your weather today?
…you must love cold weather. Summer must be hard for you.
I hear that a lot. It couldn’t be farther from the truth. My least favourite season is winter. I don’t like the cold. Japan has varied winter weather across the country, but in the Tokyo area, it’s fairly mild, around 5-10 degrees. It’s still cold to me. It’s still my least favourite season in Japan.
I like spring and fall, but the weather is somewhat unstable. It can suddenly become cool and make it difficult for me to get out of the shower in the morning.
That brings us to summer. Summer in Japan is predictable and stable. Every day, the weather is likely to be hot, humid and sunny. I like that in Japan’s summer. I even enjoy the hot weather. It means I don’t have to feel cold for the next 3 months, at least not until November.
So, to everyone who thinks I must like winter because I’m from Canada, you’re wrong. Give me Japan’s hot and humid summer over winter any time.
35 degrees today, and it’s forecasted to be 35 degrees tomorrow. This is the summer that just won’t quit. I don’t think it’s been cooler than 30 degrees in more than a month, and most days are 33 to 35 degrees. It’s early September, which normally is hot, but not this hot! 28 degrees is the overnight low temperature. I’ve heard it’s been hotter here than in Singapore! How’s the weather where you are?
It’s that time of year again. It’s time for the rainy season, or tsuyu (梅雨) in Japanese. It begins around the middle of June and lasts until the middle of July. It’s typically very wet with sometimes heavy rain, sometimes misty rain, sometimes thunderstorms. Night time temperatures are very close to the daytime temperatures, differing by only 2 or 3 degrees sometimes. It is also very humid. Usually, it is warm to hot weather, which makes it very uncomfortable. It’s also terrible weather for doing laundry.
This year’s rainy season has started quite normally, with lots of rain. The rain started Sunday night. Last year, the rainy season started late, and even then, it was a pretty dry rainy season. Once it was supposed to have ended, the normally hot and sunny mid to late July became very wet. It was a strange summer last year. Well, I’m hoping for a normal rainy season and a normal summer this year.
We’ve already had several days approaching 30 degrees, and will have some hot days this week. The tropical air during rainy season will keep it quite muggy. After rainy season, I look forward to around 2 months of hot and sunny days with temperatures above 30 degrees and high humidity. Got to love Japan’s summer.
