These two pictures are the same photo. The first is a regular picture taken with my iPhone in the Shonandai area of Fujisawa. The second was changed using an HDR filter iPhone app. Which do you prefer?

The sky looks better in the “HDR” version but everything else looks worse. You’re not getting any better lighting or detail in the dark foreground areas and everything is suffering from a harsh red tint. It looks like all that app does is to compress the histogram and crank up the contrast in the red channel, since human eyes are naturally most attuned to red.
I’ve noticed with my iPhone (3GS) that virtually any post-processing I try on an image makes it noticeably worse, other than the apps that are designed to intentionally make the photo look grainy or aged (e.g., Hipstamatic, CameraBag, etc.)
That red tint was actually quite natural, I thought, considering it was near sunset when I took the picture. I find most of my evening photos don’t capture the colour from sunsets, but the HDR filter managed to get the effect back.
